It was through bad luck that Andreas found himself homeless. He was happy in his home with two dogs when the ceiling caved in because of mold. Health problems followed and soon, he was forced to leave his place. Luckily, he found Homes First’s St. Clair shelter. Due to the time it took for Andreas to save money and find a suitable home, he was at the shelter for nearly 2 years.
It’s been over a year in his new place, but moving out of the shelter doesn’t stop him from coming back a few times a week to help out.
Andreas began helping around the shelter while living there. With donations coming in all the time, it can get difficult to find places to store things and to keep things looking neat and tidy. But Andreas has always been hardworking and organized, so he took the initiative to help sort things around the shelter. His first task was to completely empty out, clean, and sort the stockroom.
I find it very good, because I do exercise without going to the gym!
Soon Andreas began doing more; helping with Second Harvest deliveries, clothing donations and sorting other messy spots in the shelter. The staff and supervisors were impressed with how reliable and friendly he was, and were happy when he said he’d continue to help after moving out.
For Andreas, living in the shelter was overall a good experience, and he’s happy to be giving back to the place that helped him restart his life.
Thank You Andreas for continuing to volunteer at Homes First!
