Benyam came to Canada from Ethiopia in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in biology, and a Master’s in food engineering. But despite his great educational achievements, he struggled to find a professional job in his field, as many wanted some Canadian experience.
Working in a factory for some time, Benyam knew when it closed that keeping his housing would become difficult. On top of that he had been accepted into a college program, but without income, he couldn’t afford housing, school, and the car needed to get to classes.
Moving into a Homes First shelter program in May 2020, Benyam began saving towards school. In September, he began a one-year Food Safety and Quality Assurance program at Conestoga College, and has already begun applying for jobs, hoping to join the workforce as soon as he graduates.
“By getting this education, I can put myself in a position where I can do something I know how to do.”
For Benyam, this scholarship opportunity will go a long way in helping him keep up school, but also possibly secure housing, two important first steps he’s excited to accomplish so he can began a life in Canada.
Congratulations to Benyam on receiving the HFS Access to Education Scholarship in its inaugural year!
