Many patients don’t need to be living in a psychiatric hospital but they are not yet able to live independently in the community. With few options for 2nd stage housing, many remain patient-residents. Working with CAMH, Homes First created a pilot program that would move 18 patients out of the hospital environment of CAMH to shared apartments at Homes First. New residents would receive full mental health supports from Pilot Place. Residents have the opportunity to re-connect with their community, make friends, and engage in daily living tasks (cooking, cleaning, shopping). And CAMH now has 18 spaces freed-up for new/more high-needs patients.
This pilot project has been so successful that over the next 2 years we will house 25 more CAMH patients.
