Strachan House

Strachan House is one of our supportive housing sites; it is a three storey, all‐brick building located near Liberty Village. Strachan House is leased to Homes First by the City. It contains 83 single room units organized into 12 separate “houses”. Each house provides shared kitchens, bathrooms, and common areas for approximately five to seven residents each. There are five additional units may be used for shelter units and intensive specialized staff supports 24-hours-a-day. Strachan is an innovative one-of-a-kind hybrid model that incorporates the security and support elements of a shelter, while providing residents with a home and all the rights and responsibilities of tenancy. Strachan is known in the Toronto community as a program that can maintain housing for individuals that no one else can manage to support. The residents of this building have the most complex needs in the city and without the supports of this program would likely be institutionalized either in mental health wards or in jail. Strachan House works to successfully maintain tenancies. This building is owned by the City of Toronto and leased to Homes First. Rents are not collected through the RGI model rather they are based on the maximum allowable rental amounts in an individual’s monthly social assistance. Homes First has been operating a housing program here for over 23 years.
