Thanks to a generous $1,000,000 donation from The Sprott Foundation, Homes First now has a commercial kitchen – the hub of our Centralized Food Program (CFP).
At its core, the CFP’s primary aim is to meet the nutritional, dietary and cultural needs of Homes First’s most vulnerable residents. Our goal is to provide opportunities for our residents to build individual capacity toward ending food insecurity.
Listed below are the program’s core activities:
The CFP kitchen will have the capability to produce 500 meals per week; this will allow us to support over 300 of our most food insecure supportive housing residents.
Meals will be prepared, individually packaged, and delivered directly to one of our supportive housing sites across the city. We have a dedicated delivery van equipped to transport frozen and hot-ready meals, thanks to the generous donation of $50,000 from The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Family Foundation.
Catering-sized meals of dietary, cultural and religious-specific foods will be prepared to supplement meals prepared in shelter.
The CFP kitchen will also produce community-sized meals to be enjoyed by the residents of each of our supportive housing sites. This activity will encourage our residents to build community and get to know one another.
The secondary aim of the CFP is to build capacity amongst our residents by creating an accessible learning environment. Working alongside a nutritionist, we will implement kitchen skills workshops that will cover topics such as grocery shopping on a budget, basic kitchen skills and cooking.
Once reaching full operating capacity, the CFP kitchen will prepare community meals open to be enjoyed by members of Homes First and the surrounding Jamestown community.
