Building Community at Homes First, One Connection at a Time

At Homes First, we know that providing a roof over someone’s head is just the beginning. We believe the foundation of a stable life is built not only on a home, but also through the connections and support systems that help each person thrive. Whether through shared learning, outings, or shared meals, these activities create opportunities for residents to come together, learn, and grow. These moments are key to building a strong sense of community and belonging, both in shelters and supportive housing.

Honouring Community
One of the most meaningful aspects of our programming is our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. Through educational initiatives and community events, we strive to honour Indigenous histories and deepen our appreciation for the land we live on. This year in honor of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we responded to resident feedback by decorating the walls with National Truth and Reconciliation flags and thoughtfully curated informational materials. These displays served as an open invitation for everyone to engage, learn, and reflect on the significance of this day and its vital themes.

Engaging Community
In support of building new connections, we organized a memorable trip to Niagara Falls for a group of our clients. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Falls, the outing offered a much-needed respite and a meaningful opportunity to connect with the land. We honored the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabek peoples, recognizing the enduring presence of Indigenous communities in the area.

The experience was truly transformative. Many participants shared heartfelt gratitude, with sentiments such as “I’m grateful for this opportunity to learn” and “Thank you for making this trip unforgettable.” These moments underscore the importance of creating shared experiences that foster connection and mutual understanding. Opportunities like this trip help bridge gaps, strengthen the spirit of community, and remind us all of the value of coming together to support and uplift one another.

Embracing the Season of Community and Giving
As the season of reflection and giving unfolds, we are reminded of the power of community. This time of year, we celebrate not only our work, but also the extraordinary people who bring our community to life—our residents, staff, volunteers, and supporters.

Together, we nuture spaces where healing, learning, and growth flourish, empowering each individual on their journey toward a brighter, more stable future. None of this would be possible without the unwavering generosity of our donors, whose kindness fuels our mission.
