March Community Celebrations at Homes First

March Community Celebrations at Homes First

Throughout March, Homes First hosted a series of vibrant, culturally rich, and emotionally uplifting community events across multiple shelter sites in Toronto. From an International Women’s Day makeover celebration to Eid and St. Patrick’s Day programming, these events highlighted the importance of dignity, inclusion, and joy in supportive housing environments.

These March celebrations were more than just events, they were moments of healing, connection, and self-expression for residents experiencing homelessness.

International Women’s Day Makeup Day at Homes First

In honour of International Women’s Day, Homes First hosted a special Makeup Day across five shelter sites, led by professional makeup artist Natasha Gem.

The day was designed to celebrate women’s strength, identity, and self-expression through beauty and care.

A Day of Confidence, Joy, and Self-Expression

Residents were given the opportunity to participate in professional makeup sessions that transformed more than appearances—they helped uplift spirits and restore confidence.

Across all participating sites, the atmosphere was filled with:

  • Laughter and excitement
  • Moments of reflection and connection
  • Visible boosts in confidence and self-esteem

Many participants expressed feeling seen, valued, and celebrated in a way that deeply impacted their emotional well-being.

The Importance of Self-Care in Homelessness Support

This International Women’s Day initiative reinforced an important message: self-care plays a vital role in mental health and emotional resilience, especially for individuals experiencing homelessness.

For many residents, access to personal care opportunities can be limited. Events like this provide:

  • A sense of dignity and normalcy
  • Opportunities for self-expression
  • Positive impacts on mental health and confidence

The day served as a powerful reminder that small acts of care can create meaningful emotional change.

Eid Celebration at Homes First

March also included a meaningful Eid celebration, bringing residents and staff together to honour the end of Ramadan.

The event featured:

  • Generous food donations provided by Ansaar Foundation
  • Participation from Muslim staff through music and prayer
  • Shared meals and communal celebration
  • Residents taking photos and connecting with loved ones

The celebration created a warm, inclusive environment where residents could observe a significant cultural and religious holiday with dignity and joy.

Many participants shared their experience with family and friends, showing how Eid was celebrated within the shelter community—strengthening cultural connection even in challenging circumstances.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration in March

On March 17th, Homes First also hosted a lively St. Patrick’s Day celebration across sites.

Residents enjoyed a festive atmosphere featuring:

  • Green-themed drinks, including dyed Sprite
  • Pizza and shared meals
  • Games with prizes, including beads and small rewards
  • Educational moments about the origins of St. Patrick’s Day

The event encouraged participation, curiosity, and community bonding, giving residents a chance to learn about and celebrate a cultural holiday in a fun and engaging way.
