The Power of Knowledge

The Power of Knowledge

R, a 36-year-old actuary from Sindh, Pakistan, moved to Toronto seeking a fresh start. He currently resides at one of Homes First’s shelters. Despite the challenges of settling into his new life, R approaches each day with enthusiasm, traveling over an hour to work, where he applies his love for math and statistics to assess financial risks. Although his journey hasn’t been easy, his drive to learn and grow reflects a strong commitment to his goals.

When you meet R, it’s clear he’s a social and friendly person, always ready to greet neighbours with a smile and a “good morning.” He’s also passionate about helping others, particularly newcomers, by sharing helpful information on navigating life in Toronto and the shelter system. R understands the importance of knowledge and actively seeks out opportunities to learn and connect with people. He believes that information is power—especially when it comes to finding stable housing, which he considers crucial for a better life.

Like many newcomers, R has faced the challenges of feeling lost and uncertain. But with the right information, the path ahead becomes much clearer. Access to accurate information about housing opportunities, deadlines, requirements, and available resources is vital for our clients.

In R’s words: “Thank you for welcoming immigrants and refugees. We need protection and opportunities. Please keep making our city a place where we can feel safe, clean, and supported, with the resources and community to help us thrive.” This message resonates deeply with Homes First’s mission: to provide more than just a roof, but a community that supports growth, empowerment, and healing.

At Homes First, we believe everyone deserves the chance to thrive. By connecting people with the information and resources they need, we help empower them to take the first step toward a brighter future.
