Homes First has been granted funds from the SASP network to run the Harm Reduction in Shelters project. Using a Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) approach, the project increases access for marginalized and vulnerable individuals staying in our shelters to tools and strategies that help reduce harm associated with substance use.
The project mostly consists of weekly group meetings of Peer Support Workers where there will be focused capacity-building classes, workshops, and group work exercises. All of which will better equip individuals to support others staying in the shelter or in their peer groups outside the shelter. A secondary effect of the program builds general staff capacity: having knowledgeable peers onsite for on-demand trainings and education about harm reduction for residents and this also frees up time for staff for other resident activities.
